Lindos by scooter: parking, best hours and what not to miss
Lindos is the most photographed village on Rhodes, and the one place where arriving on two wheels genuinely beats a car. The village itself is pedestrian-only, so every visitor parks above it and walks down; with a scooter you skip the queue at the barrier and find a spot in seconds.
Getting there
From Rhodes town it is about 55 km on the east-coast road, roughly an hour on a 125cc scooter and a bit less on the ODESS 650cc ATV. The road is in good condition all the way; the last kilometres wind down towards the bay with the acropolis in view. It combines perfectly with our east-coast day route.
Where to park
There are car parks on the main road above the village, on both sides of the junction. Two-wheelers are usually waved to a separate area near the entrance. Lock the helmet to the vehicle or take it with you; do not leave anything in the front basket.
Best hours
- Early morning (before 10:00): cool, empty alleys, soft light on the acropolis. Our favourite.
- Midday: hot and crowded with excursion buses. Go to the beach instead.
- Late afternoon: the buses leave, the light turns golden and the roof-top bars open.
What to see
The acropolis stands 116 metres above the village, with the temple of Athena Lindia and medieval walls built by the Knights. The walk up takes 15 to 20 minutes on stone steps; take water and a hat. The village is a maze of white houses with pebble-mosaic courtyards, many of them 16th and 17th century captains' houses. St Paul's Bay, just south of the acropolis, is a near-circular cove with a tiny white chapel, one of the calmest swims on the island.
Beaches around Lindos
Lindos main beach is sandy and organised. St Paul's Bay is smaller and quieter. Ten minutes south, Pefkos has a relaxed strip of sandy coves under the pines, perfect for the end of the day.
Riding tips
- The descent into Lindos is steep with hairpins: use engine braking, not just the brakes.
- In summer the tarmac is hot; wear closed shoes and long trousers if you plan to ride at dusk.
- Fuel up in Kalathos or Lardos before going further south.
