Exploring Rhodes by ATV: a one-day east-coast route from Rhodes town to Lindos

The east coast is the easiest and most rewarding first ride on Rhodes: a well-surfaced road, calm beaches every few kilometres and Lindos at the end. Here is how we would spend the day on a 300cc scooter or a 650cc ATV.

08:30 – Pick up and head south

Leave Rhodes town after the morning traffic. Fill up on the way out; petrol stations are frequent on the east coast but scarce inland.

09:00 – Kallithea Springs

Only 9 km from town, the restored Italian-era baths are worth 45 minutes: mosaic courtyards, a rotunda and a tiny cove for a first swim before the crowds arrive.

10:30 – Anthony Quinn Bay and Ladiko

Two small, rocky coves south of Faliraki with clear green water. Parking is limited, which is exactly where a scooter or ATV makes life easier.

12:00 – Seven Springs

Turn inland at Kolymbia. A shaded valley, plane trees, peacocks and a taverna: the perfect place for lunch out of the sun. The 186-metre tunnel to the small lake is optional and not for the claustrophobic.

14:00 – Tsambika beach

A long, sandy beach below the Tsambika monastery. Ride up the monastery road for one of the best views on the island, then swim.

16:00 – Lindos

Whitewashed houses under the ancient acropolis. Leave your vehicle at the car park above the village and walk down; in late afternoon the light is softer and the day-trippers are leaving. Finish with a swim in St Paul's Bay.

18:30 – Back to town

About 55 km, roughly an hour on the main road. Take it easy: the sun is low and the road is busy with returning traffic.

Practical tips

• Total distance is around 130 km. A full tank is enough for the day on our scooters; the ODESS 650 ATV may need a top-up.
• Helmets are provided and required. Wear closed shoes, sunscreen and take water.
• Between June and September start early: the coast road and Lindos are busiest from 11:00 to 16:00.
• Bring cash for the small tavernas and the Kallithea entrance fee.
